🔒 Unclouding My Life: Self-Hosting Thermostats, Cameras & Smart Devices

Over the past few years, I’ve been on a mission to cancel unnecessary subscriptions and take back my privacy from the cloud. Basically, I’ve been unclouding my life—self-hosting everything I can. ☁️❌

 

😡 Why I Ditched Cloud-Connected Devices

I started questioning why simple devices like a thermostat or a camera need internet access at all:

  • 🌡️ Thermostats shouldn’t need to “phone home” just to change the temperature.
  • 📹 Cameras shouldn’t stream to some third-party cloud just so I can view them.
  • 📺 Even my Roku remote started recording me without pressing the mic button—total invasion of privacy.

So I took matters into my own hands: blocked telemetry with Pi-hole, modified my hardware (yes, I literally drilled out remote microphones 😂), and switched my phone to a de-Googled Android OS.

 

🌡️ Honeywell T9 Thermostat

I replaced my EcoBee thermostat with the Honeywell Home T9 Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat. Why?

  • ⚡ Instant response when changing temperature (no 30–60 sec delay like EcoBee).
  • 🌐 Works offline on LAN if the internet goes out.
  • 🤝 Supports Home Assistant & Homebridge for full local control.

Result: no cloud dependency, full privacy, and a snappy smart home experience.

 

🚪 Reolink Video Doorbell

I dropped Alarm.com’s subscription-based doorbell for the Reolink Wi-Fi Video Doorbell. Huge upgrade:

  • 💾 Records locally to NAS, FTP, or microSD.
  • ❌ No forced account signup or cloud registration.
  • ⚡ Video loads instantly on my LAN—no waiting minutes for feeds.
  • 🤝 Works with Home Assistant.

Now when someone rings my doorbell, the feed loads immediately on my phone or Home Assistant dashboard.
